‘Still no Jewish Prime Minister’

22 December 2008 – “Is it conceivable that one day, a Turk will become Prime Minister”, Turkish independent newspaper Taraf recently asked Mayor Job Cohen. “Jews have been living in the Netherlands for 300 years and we still haven’t had a Jewish Prime Minister”, he answered.

In 2003, Cohen himself was a candidate to become Prime Minister, but this did not happen because the PvdA failed to win the election.

Cohen was quoted in an article in Taraf which appeared earlier this month. The article explains how 9/11 and the murder of film maker Theo van Gogh have caused a rise in xenophobia and Islamophobia in Amsterdam, to which the city has responded with campaigns emphasising the shared identity of Amsterdammers.

Cohen says the government does not interfere in religious affairs but that he does think it is significant that the city has a mosque bearing the name Western Mosque, which he considers a sign of integration. The article does not mention the controversies over the Western Mosque.
