Outcome study trip unclear

18 April 2008 - Last week, alderman Maarten van Poelgeest and chairman Duco Adema of the Zuideramstel District made a study trip to Canary Wharf, the London business district that serves as an example for the Zuidas. What result the trip has yielded remains a mystery.

In itself, a trip to Canary Wharf would seem like a good idea. Earlier this year, the PvdA said the municipality should introduce social contracting at the Zuidas. Some innovative initiatives on social contracting have been developed at Canary Wharf by unions and community organisations.

Whether Van Poelgeest and Adema actually met with these organisations remains unclear. According to the Zuideramstel website, the objective of the trip was to look into "the development of public space, the creative industry and the development of tourism in areas comparable to the Zuidas".

A spokesperson of Van Poelgeest says the trip was about the gentrification of the poor neighbourhoods surrounding Canary Wharf. However, even after a number of attempts to find out, it remains unclear which organisations have been visited and what lessons were learned.
