Protesting cleaners storm ING Bank

6 December 2007 - Police and security guards failed to stop some fifty protesting cleaners entering the ING Bank headquarters this morning. The cleaners, supported by rebel clowns and the Rhythms of Resistance samba band, hold the ING and other clients of cleaning companies responsible for the poverty wages they are paid.

Many cleaners need to take on more than one job in order to support their families. When they attend union meetings, they get the toughest and dirtiest jobs as a punishment. Cleaning companies hide behind their clients, who force them to cut costs at the expense of the cleaners.

During the past weeks, delegations of cleaners have visited companies and institutions to ask their support for a campaign demanding ten euro per hour and more respect. Since this did not have the intended result, they have now resorted to more noisy methods. In addition to ING Bank, cleaners demonstrated at ABN Amro, Schiphol and at ministries in the Hague.

An ING spokesperson promised to discuss the matter with the cleaning companies.
