Province: almost no candidates from West

11 February 2007 - More than half the Amsterdam candidates for the provincial elections live in the districts Oud Zuid, Centrum and Zeeburg. The western districts Osdorp, Slotervaart, Geuzenveld, Bos en Lommer and de Baarsjes are almost entirely out of the picture.

News from Amsterdam analysed the candidates for the provincial elections on 7 March. The table below indicates in which districts the 65 candidates from Amsterdam live.

Centrum and Oud Zuid have the highest numbers of highly educated Amsterdammers among their residents. This may explain why many candidates are from these districts, for education strongly correlates with political participation. Why Zeeburg has such a strong position is unclear.

The analysis of the candidates is based on the lists of candidates for constituency 3; this implies that a few regional candidates from Amsterdam are not included in the analysis. The candidates of the Partij voor de Dieren (Party for the Animals) are not included either, because their addresses are not available.
