Tip theft in the Watergraafsmeer

22 December 2006 – Deliverers of the free local paper de Echo from other neighbourhoods deliver their cards with New Year’s greetings in de Watergraafsmeer, because the tips are generous there. This reports the Digitale Meerbode.

Every year, there are complaints about kids posing as the newspaper deliverer in order to steal the New Year’s tip from the real deliverer. This year, de Echo has printed a number on its New Year’s greeting cards, which allows for identification of the deliverer.

According to the Digitale Meerbode, tips are more generous in the prosperous Watergraafsmeer. Deliverers from other neighbourhoods would therefore distribute their New Year’s greeting cards in the Watergraafsmeer, so as to collect more money than they would in their own neighbourhood.

De Echo cannot confirm the story about the Watergraafsmeer. A spokesperson does confirm that a number has been printed on the cards this year. Many people call to ask questions, for example because more than one ‘deliverer’ presented themselves at their door.
