New York emulates Febo

1 September 2006 – This week, Automat has been opened, a New York version of the Febo. The most important difference is that Automat brands itself as trendy rather than raunchy. “Yes, this is very New York”.

The initiators discovered the Febo in Amsterdam and decided to export the concept to America. “I realised immediately that this would catch on in New York. The speed, its user friendliness, the style... yes, this is very New York”, Robert Kwak told NRC Handelsblad.

Not only was the concept copied, the entire machinery was bought from Febo. However, the colour yellow was changed into bright pink. Automat has been given an appearance that suggests that it is part of a well-developed restaurant-chain, the New York Sun wrote.

The food at the Automat is hipper than the snacks at the Febo: mozzarella sticks and pizza dumplings. However, the cheese croquet will be given a chance as well.“Whether such a thing will catch on in New York I do not know, but I wanted to have at least tried it”, Kwak told NRC Handelsblad.
