Hero’s cap

25 August 2006 – Today, Geert Wilders’ right-wing populist Freedom Party presented its candidates for the 22 November elections. The list includes Raymond de Roon, Solicitor General at the Amsterdam court, and Hero Brinkman, a hard-line policeman in the city centre.

Brinkman is in favour of tougher sentences and stricter drugs policies. He has no warm feelings for squatters: “I know not one squat that did not turn into a criminal den, where drugs and stolen properties are sold, within two days”, he recently told the Volkskrant.

Squatters once put up ‘not just two crates of beer, but now a bottle of whiskey as well’ for anyone who would get a hold of ‘hero’s cap’. Indymedia reported that a squat was raided because of this.

Polls suggest that the Freedom Party may obtain one to three seats in Parliament, but the recent launch of another right-wing populist party makes the outcome highly uncertain.
