To Beijing in a Mustang

14 July 2006 – Tomorrow morning, the Amsterdam-Beijing Classic Car Endurance Rally 2006 will depart. Today, the cars assemble at the Dam. Seventy cars participate in the tour, which will end 13 August. Participants will have to travel 17.000 kilometer.

The tour will pass through Turkey, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kirghizistan, Kazachstan and China. These would seem difficult countries to organise such an event, but organiser Jan Vermeer says it’s not too bad.

At the Gele Draak website, he says: “on this issue, I sometimes say, ‘thank God these are not democracies’. When a leader says ‘yes’, it is ‘yes’. The cooperation is very good. For example, at various places, mayors will come to give the flag signal at the start in the morning”.

The rally will be used to improve the trading relations with China. At the arrival in Beijing for example, a large Holland event will be hosted. Earlier this year, Mayor Job Cohen visited China on a trade mission.
