Show-offs under scrutiny

8 June 2006 – In the entire Amsterdam-Amstelland region, the police is going after criminals’ money and possessions. People who show off their wealth, can be considered suspects of money laundering. Subsequently, the police tries to confiscate their status symbols.

So far, 21 suspects have been arrested and 33 expensive cars, eight motor cycles, two mopeds, two quads, a house boat, three jet skis, a speedboat, five million euro in cash, jewels, bank balances worth tens of thousands euros, and audio / video appliances worth 150,000 euros have been confiscated using this method. As an indirect result, six fire arms, ammunition, two stunguns, hard drugs and three installations for growing cannabis where found during house searches.

The method aims not only to deal with the criminals involved, but also to prevent them becoming role models for other people.

Until now, the Bureau of Financial and Economic Investigations (BFER) has been responsible for dealing with criminal wealth. Their knowledge is now being transfered to the rest of the corps. In the future, other corpses will be taught the method as well.
