How to say ‘stadsdeel’ in English

26 November 2017

Wikipedia calls Amsterdam’s stadsdelen boroughs, but News from Amsterdam calls them districts. The official list of translations of municipal terminology, which has recently been updated, may provide guidance. According to the city government, stadsdeel should be translated as City District.

But what about the names of districts? The official translation of Stadsdeel Centrum is Centre district, but the other districts are translated as City district of Nieuw-West, City district of Oost, etcetera. It appears that use of these names has so far been largely limited to the resumes of the aldermen (who, incidentally, have been promoted to Deputy Mayor).

News from Amsterdam thinks names like City district of Noord are a bit pompous and sticks to Noord District. And Centrum District - better be consistent.
