Diemen offended by Palin comparison

8 November 2008 - The city council of neighbouring town Diemen has passed a motion against Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen, because he compared Diemen to Sarah Palin's home town Wasilla.

On Wednesday, Cohen told het Parool that he was 'extremely happy' that Palin will not be America's vice-president. "With her, you got the feeling that someone who had been Mayor of Diemen for four years and Commissionor of the Flevoland Province for two years was aiming for the highest office".

Diemen CDA party leader Martin Tokkie called Cohen's remark 'inappropriate'. "We are working to improve Diemen's image, so this is not what we need". He proposed a motion expressing disappointment at Cohen's remark. The motion was supported by all parties except the SP.

Diemen Mayor Amy Koopmanschap (GroenLinks) assured het Parool that she did not feel offended by Cohen's remark.
