Slotervaart fed up with aggressive salesmen

18 July 2008 - Residents in Slotervaart are fed up with the aggressive behaviour of salesmen representing companies such as KPN, UPC, Tele2 and energy companies such as NUON, OXXIO, Eneco and Green Choice, a survey revealed. Some end up with double energy bills after having been intimidated into signing a contract.

Some respondents said they are afraid to open the door after 5 pm or to leave their children at home alone, because salesmen would sometimes ask children to sign contracts. Elderly respondents said they felt unsafe because salesmen show they know a lot of personal details about them.

Over fifty respondents indicated they want to help do something about the problem. Suggestions include informing people of their rights and translating contracts, but also organising protests and patrolling the streets to accost salesmen.

The survey was initiated by the Impuls citizens' advice bureau because of a rise in the number of people who had gotten into problems as a result of these practices. The survey was carried out earlier this year in collaboration with community organisations.
