White bicycles in Paris

28 January 2007 - The Provos once invented the white bicycle plan to provide free bicycles in Amsterdam, but now France is implementing it. If all goes well, Parisians will have over twenty thousand bicycles at their disposal, almost for free. The service should become available when city beach Paris Plage opens in July.

Lyon already has high tech ‘vélo’v’ bicycles that can be collected from a self-service station. The average distance between stations is 300 metres, and bicycles may be left at another station than the one where they were borrowed. Using the vélo’v costs almost nothing and the first half hour is even free.

Advertising company JCDécaux provides the bicycles. In exchange, it gets to operate the city’s advertising signs (abris). Whether the company will be granted the Paris contract as well is not yet certain. Competitor Clear Channel is also interested.
