Remkes to meet district chairpersons

25 January 2007 - Last October, Minister Johan Remkes (Conservative VVD) said he wanted a new government to make firm agreements on abolishing the districts. In this way, he wanted to do something about the fragmentation of public administration.

By now, it seems unlikely that the outgoing minister’s party will be part of the new government. Nevertheless, the district chairpersons want to discuss his plans with him. Remkes has accepted the invitation and will come to Amsterdam next Monday.

Meanwhile, the municipality and the districts are discussing plans to reform the districts. Critics say that the plans intend to sidetrack democratic control of decision making. Parool reports today that the municipality has decided to carry out the controversial plan.
