‘No Baarsjes promotion’

11 November 2006 – De Baarsjes wants to spend 25,000 euro on a campaign to promote the district. Green party GroenLinks thinks that the money can better be used to do something against the intimidation of renters.

The aim of the proposed campaign is to draw new residents to the district. According to Coos Hoebe, party leader of GroenLinks, this will only drive up housing prices, while there is already a shortage of affordable houses.

The district council wants to promote social cohesion by offering residents who need a larger house the opportunity to remain living in their own district. Scarce houses must therefore not be advertised to other groups.

“House seekers from outside de Baarsjes are welcome, but it is nonsense to draw them in using public money”, says Hoebe.

The money can better be spent on measures to support renters. Landlords who want to renovate regularly try to get rid of renters by use of intimidation and threats.
