Districts: media blunder

30 October 2006 – In their reporting on the debate on the future of the districts, television channel At5 and the Parool newspaper have made a painful mistake. They draw serious conclusions on the basis of a poll at the At5 website, even though such polls are notoriously unreliable.

According to the Parool, about two thousand people participated in the poll, among whom some three quarters would agree with Minister Johan Remkes’ plan to abolish the districts. Over 57% would even find this a ‘brilliant’ idea.

The local TV channel made a report about this outcome, followed by an article in today’s Parool, with the headline: ‘Many people want to be rid of districts: general approval for Remkes proposition’. The article does not discuss the reliability of the poll.

Polls on websites can easily distort reality, because it is unknown who participates and who does not. It is therefore highly unusual to use the outcomes of this type of polls as a basis for serious reporting.
