Swimming pool ceases to be hip

8 June 2006 – The orange-brown decoration of the Mirandabad will disappear during a renovation that will start this summer, the Echo newspaper reports. The tiles that Michael Jackson once walked on will be replaced by a clear blue floor. Whether swimmers will be charged for using the lockers, is as yet unclear.

Because of its retro look, the changing room is frequently hired for photo shoots. After a previous renovation, the Jackson Five walked on the floor during the festive reopening. However, the tiles no longer meet the hygienic criteria of the Noord-Holland province, mainly because the tiles are difficult to clean.

Underfloor heating will make the changing room more comfortable. On the other hand, swimmers will perhaps be charged fifty cents for using the lockers. According to alderman Henk Boes this is no problem: “when two people share a locker, it is only twenty-five cent per person”.

The district council is not entirely convinced by this logic. Local party ZuiderAmstelBelangen reports that a decision on this ‘concealed price increase’ has been postponed. The issue will be discussed again 20 June.
