Clean air: Amsterdam among the best

22 February 2006 – Amsterdam ranks among the municipalities with the best measures to fight air pollution, according to a study of 61 municipalities published by Natuur en Milieu today. However, the Landsmeer municipality complains about polluted air from Amsterdam.

The study shows that the majority of the municipalities hardly do anything to promote clean air. Among other things, bicycle policies, parking policies, conditions for companies that apply for a permit, and measures to promote cleaner cars were looked into.

Amsterdam is one of six municipalities that plans to introduce at least five out of ten measures looked into by the researchers. “If these measures will be carried out in their entirety, with some additional policies here and there, detrimental effects to public health will be reduced effectively”, the report says.

One of the low-ranking municipalities, Landsmeer, complains that it has to cope with polluted air coming in from Amsterdam. The alderman argues for a regional approach.
